Common Causes of Flickering Lights

If you’re experiencing flickering lights in your home, it’s important to find the source of the problem. While you could be facing a simple repair, your problem could be more serious and possibly lead to injury or death if not properly addressed.

You can begin to carefully assess the issues yourself with basic troubleshooting. If these steps for common causes of flickering lights don’t set things right, it may be in your best interest to bring in a licensed residential electrician to ensure your safety.

Troubleshooting Flickering Lights

  • If your lights are only flickering on one light, you should check that the plug is securely inserted into the electrical outlet and that it doesn’t have any visible signs of damage. If it is not in good appearance, you can find wiring kits at your local hardware store to repair the lamp or replace it altogether with a new one.
  • If all cords are in good standing, you can check that the light bulb is screwed in tightly enough. Make sure to let the bulb cool down before touching it. You should also check that it is the right size bulb for the wattage and voltage recommendations of the specific light.
  • Next, check the light switch. It could be that you have a poor connection. Giving the switch a little wiggle should make the flickering occur if this is the case. If so, have the switch replaced.
  • When the flickering is occurring when another appliance starts up, it may be that your circuit is overloaded. This happens when everything that is plugged in is requiring more electricity than the circuit is capable of supplying. Sometimes this isn’t a major issue, but it may be cause for concern if it is happening all the time or doesn’t stop after a second or two. Consult with a licensed electrician to diagnose and fix the problem.
