Extension cords are handy, affordable and present in most homes. As handy as they are, improperly using extension cords are a common cause of electrical shock. Read below for important extension cord safety tips.
Stay Safe Using Extension Cords
Look for testing laboratory approvals and and buy extension cords that are rated for the appliance or tool you’ll be using it with. Don’t use indoor rated cords outside, and be sure the power capacity meets or exceeds the fixture you’ll be using it with.
Don’t force a 3 pronged plug into a two prong receptacle, and never remove the ground post from a 3 prong plug.
“Daisy-Chaining,” or connecting 2 or more extension cords together to reach further is dangerous. Instead, buy a longer extension cord for your project.
Don’t substitute extension cords for permanent wiring. If there’s a place in your home that you use an extension cord all of the time, look into installing additional outlets instead.
Do not place cords under rugs or carpets. Covering them up can prevent heat from escaping and lead to fires.
Also don’t spam cords across doorways or other places they can become tripping hazards.
Inspect your extension cords for fraying or other damage. Also, don’t try to repair extension cords. If the casing is worn, you see fraying or melting simply replace the cord.
Never use staples or nails to secure extension cords. Instead use cord clips.
Don’t use or store your extension cords in damp or wet places. The moisture will damage the cord when not in use, and cause electrical shock when being used.
Unplug and store plugs when not in use.
