Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Residential Electrician

Your home is likely your largest investment, so when hiring a residential electrician it only makes sense to do some homework. Here are some questions you should ask before hiring a residential electrician

Are They Licensed?

Beyond a business license, every state has licensing requirements for electricians. In Nevada, residential and commercial electricians are governed by the Nevada State Contractors Board. The board protects the public by regulating contractors, and ensuring they comply with both electrical codes and contractual obligations.

You can find out if a company is licensed on the NSCB Website

Are They Insured?

Contractors should carry 2 types of insurance: general liability insurance and workers comp insurance.

Liability insurance covers any damage the contractor may inadvertently cause to your home or business.

Worker’s compensation insurance covers the contractor’s employees should they be injured on your property.

You’re home is an investment. Do your homework before you hire a residential electrician or any other contractor.

Are They Bonded

A bond is different than insurance as the bond covers the work itself. The bond covers you should the contraction not complete the work he was hired to do, or if the work is completed incorrectly.

Is the Work Guaranteed?

This one’s pretty self explanatory. At Fowler Electric we guarantee our work for a year. That guarantee is both for the labor and any material we provide. Always hire a residential electrician who will stand behind the work that they do.

Do They Do Their Own Work?

Some contractors farm out all or portions of jobs that they take. There is nothing wrong with that per se, as long as the contractor is not claiming they will be doing work that another company is actually doing. Be sure you know who you’re dealing with when you hire an electrical contractor.
